September 26, 2025 – Not too much new out here. The beavers are still active up at the pond, and the wood ducks are around, too. The grackles came through a little while ago, but they’ve already moved on. I think the great blue heron is still here. It was around last week.
We’ve had partridges, turkeys, blue jays, and doves. I haven’t seen any purple finches lately, so I guess they’ve left for the season. Chickadees are finally coming back to the feeders after spending time out in the fields.
Right now, I see a chipmunk by the feeder. The red squirrels are here all the time, but lately the chipmunks have been busy digging holes and stuffing their cheeks with dead leaves for bedding. A few crows have been flying around, and I spotted a raven two days ago. Visitors have also mentioned seeing partridges.
The woodpeckers are busy too; Downy, Hairy, and even the big Pileated, which has flown over a few times. People reported hearing a moose nearby, though they didn’t catch a glimpse of it.
Other than that, it’s been the usual birds: blue jays and doves. Folks have commented that this stream is still running with water, while others in the area have already dried up. Water levels are actually a little higher than normal after last night.
The foliage is changing quickly now. Come and enjoy the trail!
