Wild Beauty & No Crowds
While Maine’s High Peaks region is known for its iconic hikes, increased visitation in recent years has led to some trailheads and summits becoming crowded, making it harder to find the quiet, natural experiences many hikers seek. The Scenic 7 Hiking Challenge offers a true Maine experience: wild beauty, tranquility, and the chance to immerse yourself in nature without the crowds.
The challenge features four mountain summits and three scenic trails, each chosen for its natural beauty and solitude. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or new to the outdoors, the hikes vary in difficulty and length, providing something for everyone. Complete all seven hikes to become a Challenge Champion and earn a patch, sticker, and online recognition. You can also log your hikes on Maine Trail Finder to earn a digital badge.
“These seven trails are a sampler of some less-visited but truly spectacular hiking terrain—some of the best of Western Maine,” says Doug Dunlap, local guidebook author and High Peaks Alliance board member.
