Exploring the World of Fungi
Most of us recognize the mushroom caps that pop up in the forest or our yards after a good rain, but how much do we know about fungi? On October 14, our High Peaks Naturalist Series participants explored this diverse and often hidden world at the Fly Rod Crosby Trail at the Sandy River Rangeley Lakes Railroad.
We discussed fungal anatomy, how fungi obtain nutrients, and their important roles in forest ecosystems, including how much is happening beneath our feet even when mushrooms aren’t visible. A few rainy days before the walk gave us plenty to discover!
As we transitioned into a BioBlitz, we found expertise within our own group, including a Maine Master Gardener and a community mycologist. Their knowledge, along with everyone’s enthusiasm and curiosity, made for a rewarding afternoon of discovery and shared learning.
