The Fascinating World of Birds
June 10, 2026 – June’s High Peaks Alliance Naturalist Series brought Maine Master Naturalists Vicky Charbonneau and Darin Schwartz together with enthusiastic participants at the Prescott Field Trailhead in Farmington to explore the fascinating world of birds. Vicky and Darin welcomed Emily, the newly selected High Peaks Alliance intern, to her first Naturalist Series walk. She was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the Maine woodlands.
As we all met in the parking lot, there was no shortage of birdsongs surrounding us. Our trail walk began with an overview of the unique anatomy and physiology of birds. After a brief binoculars tutorial, we hit the trail! Along the trail, we honed our birding skills, learned how to use the Merlin app, and discussed various species of local and migratory birds.
We had the opportunity to document Gray Catbird, American Redstart, Black-capped Chickadee, Red-eyed Vireo, Blue-eyed Vireo, Brown Creeper, American Robin, European Starling, Nuthatch, Northern Yellow Warbler, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Tufted Titmouse, Song Sparrow (briefly in the underbrush), Cedar Waxwing, and Eastern Kingbird.
Once again, participants were eager to learn and enjoyed the hands-on experience in the beautiful woodlands of Maine!
While this series is sold out, there’s still plenty of opportunity to connect with nature and learn with High Peaks Alliance! Explore our upcoming programs, including more trail walks designed for all ages and experience levels.
