Journaling the Wildflowers
July 10, 2026 – July’s High Peaks Alliance Naturalist Series brought Maine Master Naturalists Vicky Charbonneau and Darin Schwartz together with seven enthusiastic participants at the Perham Birding Trail in Madrid. The month’s focus was Wildflowers and Journaling.
The group met at the trailhead parking area across from the homestead museum and began with an introduction to journaling. Vicky and Darin shared a thoughtful display of their journaling tools and books to demonstrate a variety of methods. Participants explored the materials and engaged in a lively discussion about journaling practices.
Building on this introduction, Vicky and Darin showed how participants could apply these methods using the journals Vicky had created for them. The group then learned a systematic approach to identifying wildflowers using a New England field guide and dichotomous key.
Participants split into two groups, hit the trail, and began journaling and identifying wildflowers. The topic was enthusiastically received, and participants shared that they were looking forward to the next presentation walk in the series.
While this series is sold out, there are still plenty of opportunities to connect with nature and learn with High Peaks Alliance! Explore our upcoming programs, including more trail walks designed for all ages and experience levels.
