Term: Contract Position – 900 hours (Flexible – May through October)
Location: Work across the High Peaks Region predominantly in Franklin and Somerset County, ME
Summary of Position: The Recreation Technician is responsible for maintaining HPA lands and trails. This position will also work on State lands to maintain and monitor campsites, access sites, and state-owned conservation lands. This position will require travel throughout the region to the many public land areas. Field work may be in inclement weather on occasion. This position will maintain close contact with and report directly to the HPA’s Executive Director for direct supervision. The position may supervise volunteers. Other duties as assigned.
Job Responsibilities:
Partnership with State and Towns:
- Maintain trails, campsites, and access sites for State and Town-owned lands including but not limited to the Bureau of Parks and Lands (BPL).
- Monitor BPL lands regularly for access and public issues including misuse & trail maintenance.
- Provide information to visitors encountered during monitoring visits.
HPA Trails and Lands:
- Lead maintenance on the HPA-owned or maintained trails and lands.
- Work with and recruit volunteers to maintain trails and access the HPA-controlled properties.
- Work with the Fly Rod Crosby Committee on trail maintenance and volunteer capacity building.
Public Outings and Outreach:
- Plan and execute volunteer trail work days to build a core group of trail volunteers.
- Offer outreach events by HPA and in partnership with other groups.
- Assist and compile meeting notes from public outreach meetings and sessions.
Qualifications:
- Ability to work effectively without close supervision
- Driver’s license and reliable personal transportation
- Experience maintaining and building trails
- Ability to lift and carry heavy materials and equipment over rough ground like lumber, tools, or other materials necessary for trail building
- Willingness to work in sometimes adverse conditions including heat, inclement weather, biting insects, and difficult terrain
- Ability to use hand and power tools in the field
- Ability to work responsibly, safely, and independently
- A positive attitude and demonstrated passion for land conservation
- Experience leading volunteers
- Strong communication skills and attention to detail
- Ability to report and document work activities
Details: Pay range of $18-$20 per hour, Mileage reimbursed for travel
