Protecting the High Peaks for All

The High Peaks Recreation Rangers are a dedicated team of stewards working across Franklin and Somerset Counties to maintain trails, campsites, and public lands.

Led by the Alliance, the High Peaks Rec Rangers is a collaboration with three partners: Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust (RLHT), Maine Huts & Trails (MHT), and the Bureau of Parks and Lands (BPL).

Rec Rangers care for over a hundred miles of trails, ensuring safe, sustainable access for all who love the outdoors.

Our Mission

  • Preserve the natural beauty and ecological integrity of the High Peaks region
  • Ensure public access and safety on trails and recreation sites
  • Foster a culture of stewardship and community engagement

By the Numbers

4 Partners

The High Peaks Rec Rangers is a collaboration of four major partners: the High Peaks Alliance (HPA), Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust (RLHT), Maine Huts & Trails (MHT), and the Bureau of Parks and Lands (BPL).

6 Rangers

Six Rec Rangers will be employed to protect, maintain, and enhance the region’s trails and recreational spaces, supporting both conservation and public access.

9 Programs

The Rec Rangers will lead nine educational and outreach programs designed to engage and inform visitors, fostering a deeper connection to the natural environment and promoting responsible recreation.

42 Volunteers

The Rec Rangers collaborate with over 40 dedicated volunteer stewards who play a vital role in supporting trail maintenance and conservation efforts throughout the region.

50 Campsites

The Rec Rangers maintain 50 campsites and access points across the region, ensuring these sites remain welcoming, safe, and accessible for all outdoor enthusiasts.

100 miles of Trail

The Rec Rangers maintain over 100 miles of trails, ensuring safe and enjoyable outdoor experiences for all visitors.

Join the Rec Rangers

Are you interested in conservation, outdoor adventure, and making a difference? No experience is necessary—just a passion for the outdoors and a willingness to work in rugged conditions. Our Rec Rangers: 

  • Maintain and improve trails, campsites, and access points on public and private lands
  • Monitor land use and address issues such as trail misuse or environmental impact
  • Lead and recruit volunteers for trail work and community events
  • Provide information and outreach to visitors, promoting Leave No Trace principles
  • Partner with local organizations to build stewardship capacity and host educational programs

Volunteer opportunities are available throughout the region, offering something for everyone—from trail maintenance and event support to educational program assistance.
