Bringing Watershed Science to Life
What happens when it rains on a parking lot, a trail, or a mountainside? Where does that water go, and what does it carry with it?
High Peaks Alliance is looking for a community-minded volunteer to help answer these questions by bringing a hands-on watershed model into classrooms, libraries, and community spaces across western Maine.
The organization recently acquired an Enviroscape watershed model, an interactive teaching tool that demonstrates how water moves across the landscape and how everyday activities impact rivers, lakes, and drinking water. Using simple props and a simulated rainstorm, the model vividly shows how pollutants, from road salt and fertilizers to sediment and oil, travel through a watershed.
“This model makes complex environmental concepts immediately visible and memorable,” said Amanda Laliberte, Director of Engagement for the Alliance. “It’s a powerful way to connect people of all ages to the health of our local waters and landscapes.”
Now Seeking a Community Education Volunteer
High Peaks Alliance is seeking a volunteer who enjoys working with people and is passionate about the outdoors, conservation, and community education. The role involves coordinating with local schools, libraries, and community groups, transporting the model to events, and leading engaging, interactive demonstrations. Training and support will be provided.
This is a flexible opportunity with a meaningful impact: helping young people and community members better understand how their actions affect the places they live, work, and recreate.
Ideal volunteers are:
- Comfortable speaking to small groups of varying ages
- Interested in environmental education and stewardship
- Organized and able to coordinate simple outreach visits
- Based in or near the High Peaks Region, with access to transportation
By sharing this hands-on experience, the volunteer will play a key role in fostering stewardship across the High Peaks region, helping protect the clean water, healthy forests, and vibrant communities that define the area.
