Avon — The Mt. Abram senior class took in 189 pounds of food for local food pantries in a food drive on Martin Luther King Day in January. The students held their food drive at the Avon Town Office in conjunction with a free community supper put on by the Sandy River Land Trust and High Peaks Alliance, two local organizations concerned with land conservation and public access to recreational trails in the High Peaks Region of western Maine.
The High Peaks Alliance, in a new trail initiative to create the “Cornelia Fly Rod Crosby Trail,” aims to connect communities with a footpath/multi-use trail that will stretch from Strong to Oquossoc when completed.
All food for the free supper/kickoff event in January was donated by local businesses.
Special thanks to Edmunds Market, The White Elephant, and Tranten’s Store for providing the food and to Hannaford’s and Walmart for coming through with paper goods and other necessary items. The senior class graciously volunteered to help at the supper and ran a successful food drive at the door. Seniors recently donated their collection to area food pantries.
