A Community Gem at Risk
The urgency of this conservation effort is underscored by the State of the High Peaks Report, which recognizes Mosher Hill Falls as a “community gem”— one of 22 cherisheds site where residents and visitors recreate, learn, and connect with nature across the region. The report lists Mosher Hill Falls among the places that define the region’s outdoor heritage and warns that continued public access is not guaranteed unless proactive conservation steps are taken.
When asked about the project Doug Dunlap, Farmington resident, adventure author, and Alliance Board Member said, “Our family – adults and kids – has been visiting Mosher Hill Falls for years. Only a short drive from town, the falls and surrounding forest have a “deep woods” feel, alive with bird calls, the breath of the wind, and the music of falling water. A great destination for a refreshing walk, peace of mind, and an immersion into the natural world!”

Ecological and Cultural Significance
The Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands has endorsed the conservation effort, noting that “this acquisition represents a significant opportunity to protect an ecologically important landscape while enhancing public access to one of Franklin County’s treasured natural features.” The Maine Natural Areas Program has identified the Mosher Hill Falls site as ecologically significant, featuring extensive wetlands, mature hemlock stands, and habitat critical for inland wading birds, waterfowl, and amphibians. The Nature Conservancy has ranked the property as having above-average climate resiliency, making it an important refuge as ecosystems shift.
Beyond its ecological value, Mosher Hill Falls holds deep cultural significance for the region. The waterfall has served as an outdoor classroom for University of Maine at Farmington students and continues to be a destination for community members and visitors.

Inclusive, Community-Driven Planning
The High Peaks Alliance is committed to an inclusive, community-driven planning process that will ensure local voices shape the site’s future management. Public forums will be held to gather input on conservation priorities and recreational improvements, including potential trail enhancements and expanded parking.
“Opportunities for outdoor recreation for individuals and families will contribute significantly to the health and well-being of our community for generations to come,” stated LeeAnna Lavoie, MPH, Director of Community Health at MaineHealth, speaking on behalf of the Healthy Community Coalition of Greater Franklin County, which supports the project.

Enhancing Outdoor Recreation and Community Well-being
The permanent protection of Mosher Hill Falls will enhance Farmington’s outdoor recreation infrastructure, support tourism and local businesses, and create opportunities for future trail connections throughout the region.
The Land for Maine’s Future program has awarded $201,000 toward the conservation of Mosher Hill Falls. The High Peaks Alliance needs to raise a total of $550,000 to complete the purchase and ensure long-term stewardship of the property.
“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to permanently protect one of Franklin County’s most beloved natural treasures,” said Brent West, Executive Director of High Peaks Alliance. “With the state’s significant investment through LMF, we’re calling on our community to help us cross the finish line and secure this iconic waterfall for future generations.”
