Perham Stream's Natural Wealth

Conserved in 2022, the 80-acre Perham Stream Birding Trail is the first property to be owned by the Alliance. There are over two miles of walking trails, with interconnecting loops, that meander along Perham Stream and offers spectacular views of Saddleback Mountain and Mount Abraham.

Perham Stream is listed as a critical salmon and native brook trout habitat by the Maine Natural Areas Program, and endangered Little Brown bats have been located by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

Birding at Perham Stream

The Perham Stream Birding Trail is aptly named. With varying habitats and its unique location, there have been 140 bird species documented by Naturalist, Carson Hinkley in his lifetime.

Watch this short video on birding opportunities that await you at the Perham Stream Birding Trail.

What our Community Thinks

We think this property is special. Others think so too.

"Our favorite bird of the day came just as we got back near the trailhead. An Evening Grosbeak, a bird we don’t get to see that often anymore due to major populations declines, gave its distinctive call and there it was, almost glowing yellow from the middle of a spruce. A little later we saw several more feeding at Carson’s feeders. What a treat! It was an extremely satisfying morning of birding. If you visit Perham Stream Birding Trail, we’re sure you will experience the same!" - Allison & Jeff Wells

"In the many years I’ve been walking Maine trails, I’ve never encountered a place quite like Perham Stream Birding Trail. It is filled with well-preserved history and beauty — mountain views, fields, forests, and a stream with both placid stretches and rushing falls. It’s also also touching, a spot that reflects a family’s enduring connection to a particular spot, and one man’s commitment to saving the land and taking care of it." - Rebecca Goldfine, Maine By Foot

Perham Settlement Archaeological Site

Archaeologist Stephen Scharoun is recognized as the leading expert on the Perham Settlement in East Madrid, Maine. His report, “An Historical Archaeological Assessment of the Perham Settlement, East Madrid, Maine,” encapsulates the findings from extensive background research and a detailed walkover of the settlement.

The report offers an overview of the Native American and historic contexts that shaped the area, followed by a historical sketch of the Perham Settlement. This sketch is visually enriched with historic and contemporary photographs, and it includes a sketch map that marks the locations of significant points of interest.

Pictured above: Carson Hinkley walks campers back through time at one of the excavation sites.
