On the right Track

The Bemis Track Restoration project repaired and improved the nearly 8-mile stretch of road that connects important recreational and economic resources. This critical access route was severely damaged by storms in December 2023, which caused its closure and impacted outdoor recreation, tourism, and forest management industries.

The restoration included rebuilding washed-out sections, installing culverts and a bridge, improving drainage systems for better flood resilience, and regrading and resurfacing the road. Supported by an $88,625 grant from the Maine Business Recovery and Resilience Fund and a matching contribution from Wagner Forest Management and support of the Oquossoc ATV Club, the project ensured the long-term sustainability of ATV trails, hiking access points such as the Appalachian Trail, and popular destinations like Angel Falls.

Work began in summer 2025 and was completed in September, reopening the road to benefit local communities and visitors. The restoration of Bemis Track has reopened a crucial corridor that supports diverse outdoor activities, including hiking, ATV riding, and climbing, while significantly boosting the regional economy by reconnecting key trails and destinations such as the Appalachian Trail and Angel Falls. This renewed access not only enhances recreational opportunities but also strengthens local businesses dependent on tourism and forest management, ensuring long-term sustainability for the High Peaks Region.

What our Partner's Think

We think this project is an opportunity and we aren’t alone.

“Since the 2023 storms, we have devoted significant resources to conducting projects on our private road system to restore and improve access for forest management purposes. With no operational imperative to restore Bemis Track access, we were planning a prolonged period of road closure. We appreciate the High Peaks Alliance’s initiative in securing these funds and coordinating the work to restore and improve this important access.” - Dan Hudnut, Wagner Forest Management
“The disaster declaration storms from the winter of 2023-2024 impacted organizations and operations throughout the State of Maine. Projects with a resilience focus, like restoring Bemis Track, ensures long term access to important infrastructure for years to come.” - Jake Daniele, Office of Business Development, DECD
“The Bemis Track is a critical trail for our ATV club, serving as a vital connector from Roxbury and offering a popular riding experience. It attracts riders from all over, boosting our regional economy by supporting businesses like restaurants and lodging. This project helps ensure the long-term sustainability of our trails and our region.” - Wesley Jackson, of the Oquossoc ATV club
