Bemis Track

On the right Track
The Bemis Track Restoration project repaired and improved the nearly 8-mile stretch of road that connects important recreational and economic resources. This critical access route was severely damaged by storms in December 2023, which caused its closure and impacted outdoor recreation, tourism, and forest management industries.
The restoration included rebuilding washed-out sections, installing culverts and a bridge, improving drainage systems for better flood resilience, and regrading and resurfacing the road. Supported by an $88,625 grant from the Maine Business Recovery and Resilience Fund and a matching contribution from Wagner Forest Management and support of the Oquossoc ATV Club, the project ensured the long-term sustainability of ATV trails, hiking access points such as the Appalachian Trail, and popular destinations like Angel Falls.
Work began in summer 2025 and was completed in September, reopening the road to benefit local communities and visitors. The restoration of Bemis Track has reopened a crucial corridor that supports diverse outdoor activities, including hiking, ATV riding, and climbing, while significantly boosting the regional economy by reconnecting key trails and destinations such as the Appalachian Trail and Angel Falls. This renewed access not only enhances recreational opportunities but also strengthens local businesses dependent on tourism and forest management, ensuring long-term sustainability for the High Peaks Region.
