Nearly Funded
The High Peaks Alliance has been awarded a $232,000 grant to accelerate efforts to conserve the 210-acre Mosher Hill Falls in Farmington. This federal funding comes from the US Forest Service’s Community Forest Program and was the only project chosen in the state. The program supports community-led conservation, with grants given through a competitive, nationwide process to protect important forest lands for recreation, education, wildlife habitat, and local stewardship.
The conservation effort has received strong backing across Maine, including a $201,000 award from the Land for Maine’s Future program, $10,000 from the John Sage Foundation, and $25,000 in private donations. This latest funding raises the total amount secured to $470,000, bringing the Alliance within $60,000 of its $530,000 goal.
Funds will support the acquisition of the land, development of safe parking and sustainable trails, installation of educational signage, and stewardship programs for visitors of all ages. This project addresses a key conservation gap in Franklin County by safeguarding clean water, protecting habitat for iconic wildlife such as moose, deer, and brook trout, and ensuring permanent public access.

Treasured by All
Mosher Hill Falls is recognized as a “community gem” by the State of the High Peaks Reports. It’s one of 22 privately owned sites that the public can access, and these places are considered vital for keeping the character of the community strong.
“Mosher Hill Falls isn’t just a beautiful waterfall; it’s a piece of our community’s identity and outdoor heritage,” said Brent West, executive director of the High Peaks Alliance. “This grant brings us significantly closer to permanently protecting this special place.”
Farmington resident and HPA board member Doug Dunlap added, “Our family has cherished Mosher Hill Falls for years. It is a place of peace and renewal where you feel immersed in nature’s wonders, just minutes from town. Protecting this land means preserving those moments for everyone.”
HPA sincerely thanks all donors, partners, and community members who have helped bring the Mosher Hill Falls Community Forest closer to realization.
